About the Diocese
Although Anglicans first settled in New Hampshire in the 1630s, the first parish was not established until 1732. In 1802 the Diocese of New Hampshire, contiguous within the State, separated from Massachusetts to elect its own bishop, establish its own Convention and adopt its own Constitution and Canons. The Right Reverend V. Gene Robinson became Ninth Bishop of New Hampshire in 2004. ŹNew Hampshire Episcopalians now number approximately 16,000 in 49 parishes and missions. In addition to year-round congregations, the diocese includes seven active summer chapels and institutional chapels at two affiliated schools, as well as the Chapel of the Holy Angels at Diocesan House in Concord. During the first year of his episcopate, Bishop Robinson called upon the Diocese to enter into a process of Re-Imagining, encouraging and challenging New Hampshire Episcopalians to lift up individual and collective ministries, and to identify grace at work in our community of faith. Mission StatementThe mission of the Episcopal Church in the diocese of New Hampshire is initiated and empowered by the baptismal covenant with Almighty God through which its members have been incorporated into the Body of Christ and are led by the Holy Spirit - in their congregations and communities, through their institutions and as persons, in their worship and in their lives- to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ;- to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves;- to strive for justice and peace among all people, respecting the dignity of every human being. |
